Tomato Tuna Sauce Recipe

Tuna cans can save your life when you want to cook something easy and low cost! Of course, tuna with mayo is the go to combination for many people, especially for a sandwich, but this recipe is going to make you look like a chef without having to buy fancy ingredients or to do complicate steps in the cooking process.

Adding extra veggies is a great option for this recipe! Carrots and even bell peppers combine perfectly with this delicious sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans of tuna
  • 2 cups of tomato puree
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp of butter
  • 1 tsp of oregano
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, over medium heat, add the two tbsp of butter, minced garlic clove and chopped onion. Stir until the butter is melted and fragrant.
  2. Incorporate the tuna. I always use cans of tuna because it is easier but you can choose fresh if you want!
  3. Add the tomato puree and water. Stir to combine. If you want to make a larger amount of sauce, just use the ratio 1-1; one cup of tomato puree to one cup of water.
  4. Sprinkle salt, pepper and oregano. If you want the sauce to be spicy, add some red pepper flakes or hot sauce.
  5. Let the sauce cook for about 30 minutes until it reduces. The more you cook the tomato puree, the better the sauce.
  6. Serve in a large plate with your favorite pasta or enjoy it with some pita bread!
  7. The tomato tuna sauce can be store in a glass jar for up to seven days in the refrigerator. This makes this recipe perfect to meal prep or to make days in advance of an important dinner.
