Classic French Toast Recipe

This is delicious French toast is made with bread slices, eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and butter.

Serves: 4
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 12 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 6, ¾ inch thick slices of Challah, Pullman, or brioche loaf
  • 6 Large eggs
  • ¾ cup Whole milk
  • ¾ cup Heavy cream
  • ¼ cup Sugar
  • 1 pinch Kosher salt
  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 2 Tbsp Unsalted butter, divided, plus more for serving
  • Jam, maple syrup, berries, bananas or powdered sugar, for serving

Directions:

  • Preheat your oven to 250 degrees F.
  • In a large shallow baking dish, lightly whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and salt.
  • Add bread to the egg mixture and turn to coat, then press down gently on bread until you feel it starts to soak up the egg mixture, let it soak for 10 minutes, this is a key point for a delicious, not dry, texture French toast.
  • Flip the bread slice and soak on the other side, gently pressing down from time to time for 10 minutes or until bread is saturated but not soggy.
  • In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
  • Carefully lift 3 bread slices from egg mixture, letting excess drip back into the dish.
  • Cook for 2 minutes per side or until golden brown and center of toast spring back when pressed.
  • Repeat the procedure with remaining bread slices, oil, and butter.
  • Serve with butter, jam, maple syrup, berries, bananas or powdered sugar.
