No matter how sharp your knife is, it is going to get blunt after a few weeks of use. You will be forced to apply more pressure to achieve perfectly thin slices and precise dices. Asides from being annoying to cut with, a dull knife is also a potential hazard for your fingers. For sharpening your knives, here are f the best options to consider.
- Whetstone
Although there are different ways to sharpen your knife, using a whetstone is generally agreed to be a better choice since it is gentler on your blade, easy to use and relatively affordable. To get started, most manufacturers recommend that the stone be completely submerged in water for about 10-15 minutes, so be sure to check the instructions before anything.
Next, place a square of damp paper towel on a flat surface to keep the whetstone from sliding. Hold the knife at a 20-degree angle against the whetstone (its coarsest side) and gently drag each side of the knife against it a few times. Test and if it’s not sharp enough, repeat the process till your blade is restored to full health.
- Electric sharpener
This tool is a quick fix solution but it is not the best the way to sharpen your knife as it wipes out the old edge and tapers a new one, leading to loss of too much metal. Just press the coarse side, pull in towards you a few times and then move to the fine side.
- Honing steel
Rather sharpen your knife, a honing steel helps to keep it sharp. Press the bottom of the blade against the honing steel and work at a 15-20 degree angle and draw it across the steel 10 times on each side.
